RESOLVING AN INTRACTABLE RESSTANCE THROUGH THE POSITIVE USE OF AN ACTION IN THE PSYCHOANALYTIC SETTING

By Kathleen Joyce

ABSTRACT:

Although psychoanalysis is known as “the talking cure”, it has been found that sometimes talking alone is not enough to resolve resistance and spur emotional growth.  This project examines the first six years of analysis of an abused woman who remained tenaciously connected to her transference and resistance for almost four years.  At that point in the treatment the analyst initiated an action within the context of the transference, which resolved the primary resistance and thus led to change in communication.
