This paper describes an inner city public school that
was funded jointly by public and private monies.A therapeutic
holding environment called The Family Lodge was the school's
core structure.Students, families, staff were immersed in
learning how to put "all their feelings into words and
knowing the difference between the sayable and the
doable".All children were able to receive therapeutic help
without being designated special ed.
This study provides research on the direct connection
between learning and emotions.Students received ongoing
weekly group therapy provided by a therapist who worked
diligently two full days a week and another therapist working
with two artists that combined academics with reflective
process.Another therapist was available all day, every day
conducting therapy as needed in the family lodge. This paper
contains "process" from family therapy and a two year group
whose focus was to help children in the grieving process. As
ego strength developed, reading scores increased. District
scores and documentation provide an objective evaluation.
